Teadot Cafe @ Westgate

Regular Yuzu Oolong - $6.45

This is pretty ordinary, Oolong tea with some Yuzu skin on the bottom. It is basically sugar and citrus so you need to stir to dissolve the crystals. If you had tried the Korean Citron Tea, it is about the same.

Lemon Merigue - $4.80

This is my favourite. I love lemon pastries. Lemon bars, lemon tarts you name it.  This lemon merigue is flavourful. Sweet and sour lemon with yummy cream on top. Love the thick crust.

Opera - $6.90

Rich coffee and chocolate. I can taste the layers, cake, coffee and cream. I really love this as well.

Matcha Latte - $6.80

You can choose any artwork to go with your cup of latte I chose to have a cat. I think the artisan added too much milk while trying to create the cat face for me. It was too milky and overpowered the green tea.

I love the design of the teadot cafe. Relaxing place to chill with a couple of friends. There aren't usually many people here as the food is a little expensive. I think the drinks are way overpriced but the pastries are worth it and definitely a must try if you are here at Teadot.

Neighbourhood food: Jurong East

I'm back after a long hiatus. I'd been eating a lot of good food but failed to document them due to sheer laziness. I shall continue my food hunt.

This time round, I'm going to introduce some food stalls with a variety of food.

By bus:
Buses there - Bus 51, 66, 78, 78A, 79, 97, 97E, 143, 176, 197, 333 and 335
Bus stop code: 28431

By train
From Jurong East MRT station: 5-10 mins walk from Exit A

1) 宜家筵 Seafood Restaurant

Fried bee hoon with pig leg and mushroom.- $8

This is one large plate of bee hoon. It tasted a little like the canned pig trotters that can be bought from the supermarket. Maybe they have 2 cans worth of pig trotters in here because the meat portion is pretty generous. It taste pretty decent but not the best I've tasted. They serve better Hor fun and Xin Zhou Bee Hoon.

Szechuan soup - $4.50

The Sze Chuan Soup has a thick consistency and it is appetizing. A little spicy and sour with tofu, carrots, ginger, mushrooms. Pretty nice to dip the dumplings in and I tried it together with the bee hoon (which was a little dry) and it goes well together.

2)鑫鹏拉面小笼包

Here comes my favourite food store.

Shandong dumpling - 12 pieces for $5

Introducing the must try food here! This stall is opened by the mainland Chinese (PRC) and it tasted really delicious unlike most that tasted really horrendous. There is always queue during dinner time and the Shan Dong dumplings are a must-try.

The dumpling skin is not too thick and I just love it when the soup flows out when I bite it. It is very moist and I love the sweetness of the pork with ginger and vinegar. The meat filling are made with pork and chives.

Fried dumpling - 12 pieces for $5

You can peek through and see the meat in it. This is very juicy and savoury with an extra crispy skin. I just love juicy meat. Give it a go.

Ramen Play @ JEM (Jurong East)

Another shopping mall opens in Jurong East.

I'm really glad that I don't have to travel to Orchard to shop now since the brands I love are now in JEM. I visited Ramen Play with a couple of my friends.

Crispy Dango $3.60 for 3

It is served piping hot and I feel like I'm eating a chicken meatball takoyaki. The chicken is juicy and the takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise and nori made it taste even better.

Cha Shu Uobushi Tonkotsu Ramen - $12.80

Ramen is cooked really well and I love the sweet Tonkotsu (pork) soup base. The Cha Shu has got thick rings of fat. Semi liquid tamago (egg) is heavely. Everything is good except the bamboo shoot. There was an awful bamboo smell. I can't really describe it but it stinks. The bowl is perfect without them.

Itacho Sushi & Jika Udon @ Jcube

Itacho Sushi & Jika Udon is located on level 2 of Jcube. My friend and I queued for around 45mins before we entered the restaurant. While waiting, we came up with reasons why the queue was so long:

1) The food is really delicious
2) The food is really cheap
3) The shopfront is small
4) Service is slow

Moving on to the food.

Roasted salmon roll $3.80 (Itacho Sushi menu)

I think that it tasted ordinary and it is way overpriced. 4 large fish roes with a slice of torched salmon, some rice with asparagus in the middle of it.

Steam egg with crab $4.20 (Itacho Sushi menu)

I really love this one. Soft steamed egg with a layer of crab on top of it. It feels like I am eating shark fin soup and Chawanmushi at the same time. In the middle of the steam egg was a crab stick. It is a little pricey but it is pretty worth it.

Passionfruit green tea $2.50 (Jika Udon menu)

Moving on to the Jika Udon Menu.  The passionfruit green tea is good. Not too sour so you can taste the passionfruit and green tea as well. The pearls are super soft and chewy.

Udon with cod fish roes (Cold) - $10.50  (Jika Udon menu)

I was feeling adventuorous so I decided to try something different on the menu. To my horror, it is the complete opposite to how it looks. The worst udon I have ever eaten in my life. The noodles were half cooked and it is so tough. The cod fish roe were mixed with so much mayonnaise and it is cloying. I feel that it was too much for me to take after 2 mouthful. Times like this made me feel like I should stick to my comfort zone.

To sum it up, I think there are certainly nice food from the menu. I suggest you do a little bit of research before going there to eat so that you will not be as disappointed as I did.

Regarding the reasons why I think the queue was long, it has to be 2 and 4. The cashier was moving at a snail pace. There were only 2 person in front of us but we waited for 5 minutes to pay up.

Tze Char @ Foodclique

Having some Tze Char with a group of friends at Jurong East Foodclique. I guess it is like a sort of tradition to try Tze Char at least once in your lifetime in Singapore. Having 7-8 dishes to go with your meal is like a banquet.

The dishes are of three sizes, small, medium and big and varies between $10-35 for each dish.

Salad prawn

I hate peeling prawns because I am lazy that way so this one is pretty awesome. Easy to eat with no shells. It is actually a lot of mayonnaise with fried prawns. The prawns are a little overcook though. Cherry tomatoes makes it taste less oily.

Prawn paste fried chicken - 虾酱鸡

It looks like an ordinary fried chicken but it actually very delicious in my opinion. Crispy skin with super juicy chicken it in. (seriously juicy) Very smooth, tender and well marinated.

Oyster egg omelette. This one is not like those oyster omelette I usually eat. There is no flour to make the sticky layer with egg (which is what I love about oyster omelette) However, there are a lot of big and fresh oysters hidden in it. Delicious but I think it will definitely taste better with a crispy layer of egg and soft chewy layer of flour.

Sambal Fried Kang Kong

This is the usual must eat in a Tze Char store. I love sambal kang kong! Really goes well with rice and I really love the smoked taste.

Venison meat

The sauce and it really goes well with the rice. I had tasted deer's meat before and for those who haven't tried it, the texture of the meat is in between chicken and pork. It is tender and slightly springy.

Fried tofu (I forgot the actual name of the dish)

This one doesn't taste like tofu. It tasted more like fish cake with some vegetable flakes in it. Nugget size tofu dipped in mayonnaise. I like fish cake so this one is pretty good.

Coffee ribs

It is the first time I am eating coffee ribs. It feels like I am eating dessert and main course at the same time. The meat is springy, coated with a sweet layer of coffee. It is kinda like drinking coffee with the sweet caffeine smell in my mouth.

It is a treat by my friends so I don't really know the exact price for each dish. The total was for $128.40 for 7 dishes and a medium size soup. There is 7 of us so it cost less than $19 per person.

I think this Tze Char is pretty good.

Watami @ JCube

Location: 2 Jurong East Central 1 #01-17 JCube
Nearest station: Jurong East MRT

Celebrated my birthday today with my mum and my brother. It's a Friday afternoon, around 2 pm so there weren't a lot of people. It took us literally 30 seconds to get the queue number from the machine and to be served. Pretty efficient.

Kushiyaki Miso Onigiri - $4.90

For a starter, we ordered mini skewed onigiri. This tasted like the meatball onigiri I tasted in Japan. I believe the meatball on top is minced pork which tasted sweet. Sort of reminds me of Chinese Ba zhang but this is not oily at all as the rice ball is grilled. The mince and super soft contrasted with the chewy rice ball. Pretty nice.

Kankoku Butechige - $16.80

I'm surprised to find Korean Butechige here. We really love korean food so we decided to give this a go. Butechige soup base is basically a stew with gochujang (red chilli paste) and kimchi.

There is a lot of stuff in it: ramen, pork belly, sausages, tteok (korean rice cake), enokitake mushroom (Jing Zhen Gu), carrots, bean sprouts, tofu, cabbages, spring onions and kimchi. This picture was taken before the extra soup base was added in.

Soup base is quite thick and tasted kimchi-ish with slight taste of fermented soya bean.Ramen noodles are typical korean magi mee which is pretty springy. This is my first time tasting korean chige so I'm not sure if has the "authentic" taste but it tasted pretty good to me.

Watami Tonkotsu Ramen - $12.80

Char Siew is soft and tender but with a thick layer of fat.  I really hate pork smell but this ramen doesn't have the pungent pork smell at all. Soup base of sweet pork bone goodness and is mildly oily. The ramen is acceptable but not as springy as those ramen I ate in Japan.

I really love ramen but with all the dishes we ordered kinda of order overshadows this bowl of goodness.

Ika Maru Yaki -$12.80

Grilled squid. This one long squid. Surprisingly, this looks as good as it taste. The squid is easy to chew and well marinated. I love the grill taste and together with the mayonnaise, it tasted like takoyaki only without the batter and bonito flakes.

Zaru Soba - $7.80

Just wished that the soba is a little colder. The dipping broth is really good when you mix in the wasabi and spring onion.

Hot green tea - Free

Passionfruit tea - $4.80

Passionfruit juice with jelly and tapioca pearls at the bottom. This is one tall glass of drink. Not too sweet.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed with Watami. The food is pretty delectable.

As we are seated next to the glass, passerby kept staring at our food. Service wise, the crew are not very attentive and it took a little time to get our order and bill. (They are friendly though.) It gets crowded during dinner hours at Watami, in fact most restaurants in Jcube.

Total damage:  $70.50 in total inclusive of gst and service charge for 3 people. I definitely recommend this place.

Beef Noodles @ Kopitiam IMM

Sorry for the long hiatus. I'm finally back! Hope I can keep this blog running at least for another 2 months. I'm thinking of starting cooking again so watch this space!

I really like this bowl of beef noodles at the kopitiam (Level 2) of IMM. It's a beef speciality stall at the end of the row.

The gravy is not too thick nor watery, just the right consistency. I love the beef balls and the super tender beef slices. It is slightly sweet and salty.

Beef noodles: $4.50

If you happen to be in IMM, you might wanna give this a shot.

Nando's Chicken @ Jcube

Dinner at Nandos Chicken with friends. The restaurant is famous for their fiery peri peri sauce.

A little story behind "Peri-peri": A young spirited boy went exploring one day and returned late that night with the African Bird's eye Chill "Pili Pili"(Swahili word for 'pepper pepper') It had been shown to him by the African people who named it Pili-Pili. The Portugese boy couln't pronounce "Pili-Pili" and introduced the chillies as Peri-Peri.

1/4 Chicken (Hot) with 2 sidelines: $14.90 My choice was potato salad and Peri Chips.

Sidelines available
Coleslaw
Old Styled Chips
Peri Chips
Mediterranean rice
Peri potato salad
Grilled vegetables
Peri 3 Bean Salad
Spiced Rice

My obsession with potatoes. This Peri chips is soft, sprinkled with Peri powder. This isn't really spicy. I love the thick and soft potatoes.

I order the hot peri chicken. The chicken is well marinated and grilled with the Hot Peri sauce. I really like the taste of the chicken. The meat is springy.

Potato salad is delicious. Baby potatoes coated with what taste like a combination of sour cream, lime and green onions. The potatoes are soft and I don't mind eating with the skin on. Potatoes skin contains vitamin C.

Crunchy roll: $5.90

This black stuff is basically milk chocolate and the white stuff are biscuits. It is not crunchy at all so don't let the name fool you. It is really soft and just tasted like milk chocolate with soft biscuits, coated with a layer of sugar. I think it tasted okay but is a little expensive for three bite size biscuit. It would have been better if it is dark chocolate instead.

Rating: 4/5

The nandos chicken is awesome.

Chili's @ Jcube

It is my birthday! Hang out at the Chilli's. I thought Chili's is a Mexican food franchise but I just found out that the very first Chili's hamburger grill and bar started in Texas. Tex-Mex cuisine.

This is a very expensive cup of Lipton tea. $5 per cup for the soft drinks or tea but it is free flow so you can drink as much as you want. We made sure we drink at least 2 cups to make full use of our bucks!

A very interesting fact about Chili's is that all the prices of the food are in whole numbers. Like this Bacon ranch chicken quesdillas is $18. No decimal points! I like! I really love the taste of the quesdillas. I'm not sure how this is to be eaten but here is what we did. We stuff the tomatoes and lettuce in the quesdillas and put the sour cream on top and dip it into the dressing!

The chicken is tender and juicy and so are the tomatoes and lettuce. The sour cream and ranch dressing combined with the smoked taste of the chicken wrapped and slightly sour tomatoes wrapped with chewy toasted quesdilla is really fresh. Really appetizing.

Next is the Crispy honey-chipotle chicken crispers - $23. The serving is really huge, it can be share between two person.

For this dish, you can choose two sides from the menu so I choose the french fries and mashed potatoes. The staff was really nice and gave an additional cup of gravy when requested. French fries are thick and goes well with the tar tar sauce.

The mashed potatoes has a smoke taste and is rich and creamy. It has a lumpy texture and the potato skins are found in it as well. The mashed potatoes goes well with the tartar sauce too.

The chicken strips are really crispy and the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. The only complain I have is that the spicy honey sauce is a little too sweet and gets a little cloying on the second strip I had.

Here comes dessert! Chocolate chip paradise pie - $9. I think the combination of warm pie and the cold vanilla ice cream really tops this treat. I love the hot fudge and caramel drizzle with nuts bits that adds to the texture of the ice cream. The pie is a layer of coconut and a layer of walnut that is soft and sweet like brownie. A spoon of ice cream and pie is heavenly!

Rating: 4.5/5 I'm very impressed with the savory food and the staff are really friendly. The food are slightly pricey but definitely recommended.
